About Windows Update
For corporate IT managers only

Looking for distributable downloads and critical updates for your corporate network? Check out the Windows Update Corporate Site today!

It is possible to remove the Windows Update icons that appear in the Start menu. Disabling the Windows Update icons prevents users from accessing the Windows Update site (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com) from anywhere within the Windows 98 product.

To remove the Windows Update icons from the Start menu:

  1. Remove the icon from the Start/Settings group by creating the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer to read: NoWindowsUpdate = 1 (This is a DWORD value. A setting of 0 enables Windows Update icons.)
  2. Restart the computer.
  3. To remove the icon from the top group of the Start bar, run the following from the command line: Wupdmgr.exe -shortcut.
Note You should not edit your registry unless it is absolutely necessary. If there is an error in your registry, your computer may not function correctly.
