How to Download and Install Device Driver Updates

Important To uninstall a driver update that you downloaded from Windows Update, you must be able to re-install the original driver that came with your device. Removing a driver or driver update without replacing it will cause your hardware device to stop working.

Use Device Manager to remove driver updates from your computer:

  1. Right-click the My Computer icon on your computer's desktop.
  2. Click Properties, and then click the Device Manager tab.
  3. Click once to highlight the hardware device, and then click Properties.
  4. Click the Driver tab, and then click Update Driver.
  5. When the Upgrade Device Driver Wizard starts, select Specify the location of the driver (Advanced), and then click Next.
  6. Select Display a list of the known drivers for this device so that I can choose a specific driver, and then click Next.
  7. Click Have disk, and then click Browse to locate the .inf file for the driver you wish to install (this will remove the Windows Update driver, and replace it with the hardware device's original driver).
Note When you return to Windows Update, it is possible that you'll be offered the same driver update again. Do not install it.
